One hour north of sophisticated Sun Valley, Stanley is a uniquely accessible gateway to the 765,000 acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area. All four major Idaho rivers-the Salmon, South Fork Payette, Boise and Big Wood -- begin within the borders of the SNRA. Combine all that white water with the 180 glacial lakes dotting 217,000 pristine acres of

SAWTOOTH WILDERNESS and you get endless opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating and float trips. Three prominent mountain ranges -- the spectacular Sawtooths, the White Clouds, and the Salmon River Range -- offer hiking, climbing, backpacking and horseback riding on thousands of miles of trails.

The unsurpassed beauty of the terrain varies from golden prairie to dense forest to high mountain lakes and meadows inhabited by eagles, big-horn sheep, mule deer, elk, mountain lion, black bear and the famous (or infamous- according to some ranchers) Sawtooth wolves.
This year's fishing season began with a spectacular Spring Steelhead run in late February.
Brook, cutthroat, and rainbow trout are abundant just about wherever you can cast a line.

Happy Trails to You...

Cowboy Bo, as a young tenderfoot, paddles a rented kayak at nearby Red Fish Lake.

"Like Christ, and unlike most of the rest of us, a pan-fried trout is utterly forgiving...
If you open your heart and use enough butter, a trout fried in a dredged-up
chrome fender over an acetylene torch is worth eating."

Wilderness Fashion Tip:
A hat should always have a brim wide enough to
shed sun and rain, fan a campfire, dip water and
shy away a mad cow or a too friendly gal.
